4 Years at Head First: Helen Goddard

As I eat my celebration cake, I thought it a good time to reflect on my time with the Head First family. I have learnt so much about brain injury, and the value of working with excellent support workers and the Head First team. Perhaps a little cliche but I can honestly say it’s the best company I have worked for. Every member of the team is a willing soundboard ready to help in any way they can.

You cannot help but empathise and be saddened by the huge loss our clients feel post injury. But seeing how support workers and therapists enrich their lives, you feel utter pride knowing that we are making a real difference. It’s not an easy job at times, but without challenge we often cannot take the necessary steps forward.

The highlights are numerous, from the day-to-day to the carefully planned! From watching a client with walking difficulties raise money by doing laps of his parallel walking bars, to accompanying another client to walk 57km along the beautiful South Downs Way. Both enormous physical challenges, showing just how capable and determined clients are able to be when they work with the right teams providing the right support.

I am humbled by our support workers who work hard, provide additional shift cover, deal with some difficult situations, and are truly dedicated to the care and needs of our clients. Covid was a real test of their grit and ability to adapt and think outside the box.

We have an amazing family at Head First all working together to make a positive difference to the lives of our clients.

Thank you everyone for making my first 4 years so rewarding – here’s to the next 4!
